Assault on Allegheny! - Introduction

Useful Info:

Folks,

Plans have been finalized for the Fort Allegheny March and Reenactment, to be held the weekend of July 24th - 26th, 2009. Dave P. and I spent a very fruitful weekend early on October meeting with the Highland Historical Society and several pivotal local landowners. Things are moving along nicely as a result.

The event is planned as a reenactor only venue, although we should expect to have a few visitors from the local area. We also want to emphasize the preservation aspects, meaning we want to raise as much donation money as possible, above and beyond the registration fee (which will be $20). We plan on holding down our expenses as much as possible, and all proceeds will go to support the Highland Historical Society's Museum in McDowell.

The site, for those unfamiliar with it, is located at the crest of Allegheny Mountain at an elevation of approximately 4,300' above sea level. It is 22 miles west of Monterey, VA, near where Route 250 crosses into WV. The fort was designed to guard against Federal incursions along the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike, and was the site of a Confederate victory over attacking Federal forces in December, 1861. Thus, we will have the opportunity to break out the early war stuff again!

Here are some photos to whet your appetite: This is known traditionally as "Traveller's Repose". It is the site of the first Post Office west of the Allegheny Mountain, and was a tavern and stage stop from the early 19th century.

View of the still existing CS earthworks at Camp Bartow, adjacent to the Federal Friday camp area.

Representative view along the march route; note that lack of modern intrusions. This is one of the last remaining unchanged stretches of the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike and extends from Bartow, WV past the fort and to the intersection with modern Route 250 (approximately 11 miles).

View from the Pike (elev. approx 4,000') looking towards Cheat Mountain.

Saturday afternoon skirmish area and Federal camp for Saturday night.

More to come soon...
